Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This Rolex Explorer is in overall great vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The Mark 3, later service dial, is in attractive condition; it has some darker patina around the edge and in the very center that can be hard to notice depending on the lighting. The lume on the dial has aged to a lovely very pale yellow/ creamy white color. The service hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands match the color of the lume on the dial. The later Oyster bracelet is in overall good condition with normal signs of wear; it has some stretch between the links which is common for this type of bracelet.
Description: Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966.
The example we are offering here is from 1965 and would have been born with a glossy dial and it was later changed to a later Mark 3 style matte dial. It was very common for Rolex to change and update watches when they come in for routine service and that is exactly what happened with this watch. If you didn't know the serial number, one would think this is just a later 1016 with the Mark 3 dial.
