Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This Explorer is in overall great vintage condition consistent with its age. The case is in good condition with some scratches and wear; it's been polished. The dial is in great condition with light patina; the dial is a later, tritium, service replacement. The lume has aged to an attractive pale yellow. The hands are later, luminova, service replacements and will still glow. The hands have developed light patina. The bracelet is a later service replacement and is in great condition with some wear and a bit of stretch between the links. The crystal is in good condition with light wear.
Description: Rolex Explorer 1016 Stainless Steel Oyster
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959 and it was in production until 1989 making it one of the longest running produced references from the brand. At the beginning of the run Rolex made the dials glossy and then switched to the matte style around 1966.
The example we are offering here was born with a "Mark I" matte dial and it was later changed to a matte service replacement. It was very common for Rolex to change and update watches when they come in for routine service and that is exactly what happened with this 1016. This example still has a vintage look with the matte tritium service dial.
